Virgil van Dijk Reveals He's Willing to Let Liverpool Contract Run Down

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk discusses his future at the club, revealing he's willing to let his contract expire and is calm about the ongoing talks, while reaffirming his commitment to the Reds.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has urged fans not to panic about his future at the club, revealing that he is willing to let his contract expire at the end of the season if a new deal cannot be agreed upon. Van Dijk's current contract is set to expire in June, and despite ongoing talks with Liverpool, no extension has been finalized.

Van Dijk has expressed his desire to remain at Anfield, where he has enjoyed a successful seven-year stint. However, the 33-year-old defender is adopting a calm approach to the situation, stating, “Maybe I will run this fully down and then there is still no news, I don't know.” He emphasized that he does not want to create unnecessary anxiety, instead choosing to focus on the team's upcoming matches.

Van Dijk will lead Liverpool in the League Cup final against Newcastle at Wembley on Sunday. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, he has maintained his focus and performance levels. “I don't want to create any anxiety or anything like that, I just keep my head down and focus on hopefully winning the next 10 games,” he said. Van Dijk is confident that there will be news about his future by the end of the season, although he is unsure what that news will be, adding, “I am sure by the end of the season there will be news. But what kind of news I am not sure.”

Van Dijk emphasized that the discussions about his contract extension are complex and multifaceted. He reassured the media that as long as he appears calm, there is no need for panic, regardless of the outcome. “It's not a one-two-three discussion and there we go. There are multiple factors and as long as I am calm to you guys (the media) then there is no need to panic, whatever may happen in the future.”

Van Dijk reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool Football Club, stating that his focus and dedication remain unwavering. He acknowledged that if he were worried about his future, it would be reflected in his performance on the pitch. However, he asserted, “If I was worried, you would see me playing a little bit worried and that is not the case. I am fully committed to Liverpool Football Club at the moment and there is no doubt about that.”

Liverpool is currently dominating the Premier League title race with a 15-point lead, as they pursue a record-equalling 20th English crown. Van Dijk's outstanding form has been instrumental in the team's success. Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his desire to retain Van Dijk's services, saying, “The only thing I know is that I want Virgil to be here next season, and all the rest, his talks about contracts, that's not what I do over here.”
