Tuchel Wants FIFA to Rethink June Window for Player Welfare

England manager Thomas Tuchel says June international window is 'not ideal' and urges FIFA to reschedule for player welfare.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has made a strong appeal to FIFA to reconsider the scheduling of the June international window. Tuchel believes that the current timing does not provide players with a sufficient break at the end of the season.

“The June window is not ideal for anyone, especially the players,” Tuchel emphasized in a recent interview with British media on Tuesday. He stressed that FIFA has the authority to make necessary adjustments to the calendar, suggesting that alternative scheduling could greatly benefit the players.

Tuchel explained that his primary concern is not the sheer number of games played by the players, but rather the lack of extended rest periods. ”I am not so concerned about the amount of games the players play. I am more concerned that they never have a real break of three to four weeks ... That's the problem,” he stated, highlighting the need for a more player-friendly schedule.

England captain Harry Kane has weighed in on the debate surrounding player welfare, acknowledging the concerns but also expressing optimism that the situation can be managed effectively. Kane emphasized the need for a balance between generating revenue for clubs and protecting the well-being of players.

“There are arguments from the club's point of view to generate more money. And there's also a player welfare point where there's only so much you can do without more injuries,” Kane noted, highlighting the dual perspectives at play. He also expressed his frustration that players' voices are often not heard in these discussions. “I don’t think the players are listened to that much.”

Despite these challenges, Kane remains enthusiastic about playing football and believes that with proper management, players can get the rest they need. “I love playing football, so I'm never going to complain about playing football. If you manage it well, with your coaches and your clubs, there's ways of getting more rest in certain moments,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between players, coaches, and clubs.
