Recap Sunday's NHL action, featuring the Canadiens' win over the Panthers, the Penguins' shutout of the Senators, and more.
The NHL featured an eight-game slate on Sunday, with several notable storylines emerging. One of the most significant was Alexander Ovechkin's pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal-scoring record. Ovechkin, 39, scored his 890th goal, pulling within five goals of breaking Gretzky's record.

Although the Washington Capitals ultimately lost 8-5 to the Buffalo Sabres, Ovechkin's goal was a silver lining for Caps fans. With only nine games remaining in the season, Ovechkin's chances of breaking the record this year are dwindling. If he fails to achieve the feat, the hockey world will have to wait until next season to witness this historic milestone.
The Buffalo Sabres dominated the Capitals, tying their season high with eight goals. Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch each scored twice, with Thompson netting his 38th goal and Tuch scoring his 31st. The eight goals allowed by the Capitals were nearly their highest total surrendered this season.
Hurricanes Extend Winning Streak
The Carolina Hurricanes continued their impressive run, winning eight of their last 10 games to become the second-hottest team in the league. This streak places them just behind the St. Louis Blues, who are currently on a nine-game winning streak.

In their latest matchup, the Hurricanes faced off against the New York Islanders. Despite trailing 2-0 early on, the Canes mounted a comeback, securing a 6-4 victory thanks in part to Seth Jarvis' pair of goals, bringing his season total to 29. The win showcased the Hurricanes' resilience and determination.
The Islanders, on the other hand, seem to be running out of steam. What had appeared to be a promising playoff push has stalled, with the team now having lost five consecutive games. This slump has raised concerns about their ability to make a late-season surge and secure a playoff spot.
Canadiens Snap Losing Streak
The Montreal Canadiens have ended their five-game losing streak, securing a crucial 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers. This win propels the Canadiens back into the playoff hunt, as they now possess the tiebreaker over the New York Rangers (75 points) for the second Wild Card spot.
