Strasbourg Stun Lyon with 4-2 Win to Leapfrog Opponents in Ligue 1

RC Strasbourg have leapfrogged Olympique Lyonnais into fifth place in Ligue 1 after a thrilling 4-2 win at the Stade de la Meinau.

RC Strasbourg extended their unbeaten streak in Ligue 1 to seven games, with six wins and one draw, after securing a convincing 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais. This win propelled Strasbourg into fifth place in the table, leapfrogging their opponents in the process.

Lyon began the match on the front foot, with Jordan Veretout making a notable impact in his first Ligue 1 start in nearly two months. Veretout showcased his skill with an audacious, angled effort that caught Đorđe Petrović off guard, but the Serbian goalkeeper managed to parry the shot away. Veretout continued to be involved in the early stages, combining with Rayan Cherki to force another save from Petrović.

The visitors came close to taking the lead on multiple occasions. Georges Mikautadze's powerful left-footed strike rattled the crossbar after he was expertly picked out by Ainsley Maitland-Niles. These near-misses set the tone for an intense and closely contested match between two teams vying for European spots.

Olympique Lyonnais continued to dominate the proceedings, with Jordan Veretout heading over the bar from a tantalizing cross delivered by Georges Mikautadze. In contrast, the hosts, RC Strasbourg, were struggling to create scoring opportunities, although Emanuel Emegha was unfortunate not to connect with Dilane Bakwa's cross.

Lyon thought they had finally broken the deadlock when Ernest Nuamah's deflected shot beat Đorđe Petrović, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. This narrow escape seemed to galvanize Strasbourg, who emerged from the halftime break with renewed intensity and determination.

Strasbourg's revitalized approach paid dividends as they drew first blood. Andrey Santos made a well-timed run into the box, meeting Bakwa's corner with a powerful header that Lucas Perri was unable to stop. Emboldened by this goal, Strasbourg continued to press, and Bakwa added his name to the scoresheet with a brilliant individual effort. From the edge of the box, Bakwa unleashed a precise left-footed shot that found the back of the net, doubling Strasbourg's lead.

The thrilling second half took another dramatic turn when Olympique Lyonnais reduced the deficit just three minutes after Dilane Bakwa's goal. Đorđe Petrović's attempted save on Rayan Cherki's initial effort only pushed the ball upwards, allowing Corentin Tolisso to head home the loose ball and bring Lyon back into the game.

Strasbourg promptly re-established their two-goal advantage through Emanuel Emegha, who celebrated his 50th Ligue 1 appearance in style. Emegha received a pass from Valentín Barco and skillfully dispatched an angled shot past Lucas Perri. The hosts continued to pile on the pressure, and Sam Amo-Ameyaw scored his first goal for Strasbourg since joining from Southampton last month, firing home from close range.

Despite Strasbourg's dominant performance, Lyon managed to have the final say. In stoppage time, Georges Mikautadze scored from the penalty spot, capping off an eventful match. The win marked a significant milestone for Strasbourg, who have now lost only one league game at the Stade de la Meinau this season. With this victory, Le Racing bolster their bid for continental football next season, while Lyon's five-match winning streak in all competitions came to an end.
