Serie A: Atalanta's Winless Home Streak Continues with 2-0 Loss to Inter Milan

Inter Milan moved three points clear at the top of Serie A with a 2-0 win over Atalanta, thanks to goals from Carlos Augusto and Lautaro Martinez. The victory marked Inter's first away win in the league since 2024.

Inter Milan solidified their position at the top of the Serie A standings with a crucial 2-0 win over third-placed Atalanta. This victory marked Inter's third win over Atalanta this season, with the Nerazzurri keeping a clean sheet in each of those matches.

The match between the division's joint-highest scorers began with a flurry of chances. In the seventh minute, Lautaro Martinez's expert pass unlocked the Atalanta defense, sending Marcus Thuram through on goal. Thuram beat goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, but his finish clipped the inside of the post and came out. Atalanta responded with a significant opportunity of their own, but Yann Sommer made a superb save to deny Mario Pasalic's header from Marten de Roon's cross.

As the match progressed, defenses gained the upper hand, with wayward efforts from Alessandro Bastoni and Ademola Lookman being the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock before halftime. Atalanta's recent struggles to score at home continued, with their previous two matches at the Gewiss Stadium ending goalless.

Inter eventually broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, when Hakan Calhanoglu's pinpoint corner was headed home by the unmarked Carlos Augusto. Augusto's goal marked his third in the league this campaign, and it paved the way for Inter's crucial win.

Following Carlos Augusto's opening goal, Inter Milan continued to press for a second. Hakan Calhanoglu attempted a shot from 25 yards, but Marco Carnesecchi made a comfortable save. Lautaro Martinez then thought he had doubled Inter's lead, but his goal was disallowed due to a foul on Berat Djimsiti in the build-up.

As the match entered its final stages, Atalanta struggled to create scoring opportunities. It wasn't until the 80th minute that they finally managed a shot on target in the second half, but Lazar Samardzic's tame effort was easily saved by Yann Sommer.

The evening took a turn for the worse for Atalanta when Ederson was booked twice in quick succession. First, he was cautioned for fouling Marcus Thuram, and then he received a second yellow card for reacting to referee Davide Massa's decision. Inter Milan capitalized on the numerical advantage, and Lautaro Martinez sealed the win with a powerful shot past Carnesecchi four minutes from time.

The victory marked Inter Milan's first away win in the league since 2024, despite Alessandro Bastoni being sent off in added time. Meanwhile, Atalanta's winless streak at home in Serie A continued, and manager Gian Piero Gasperini was also dismissed.
