Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler made history at the Houston Open by matching the tournament record with an impressive eight-under par 62 on Friday. This achievement earned him an early lead in the second round of the PGA Houston Open.

Scheffler's remarkable performance included eight birdies in his second consecutive bogey-free round. His exceptional play secured the clubhouse lead at 11-under 129 for 36 holes at Memorial Park. Notably, Scheffler opened with two straight birdies, setting the tone for his outstanding round.

With this achievement, Scheffler has positioned himself for a strong finish in the tournament. His impressive record at Memorial Park, where he has never finished worse than T32 in five appearances, bodes well for his chances.

Scheffler reflected on his impressive performance, saying, “It felt pretty good. Hit a lot of fairways out there, gave myself a lot of looks. I holed a good amount of putts, holed a few long ones, which is always nice.”

Canada's Taylor Pendrith trailed closely behind Scheffler, securing second place with a score of 10-under 130 after his second consecutive 65. American Jackson Suber followed in third place with a score of 132, completing his second 66 before lightning interrupted play, forcing afternoon players to suspend their games.

Scheffler's remarkable 62 tied the course record at Memorial Park, a feat he had previously achieved in the 2021 second round. Tony Finau also shares this record, having scored 62 in the second rounds of 2022 and 2024. Notably, Ron Streck and Fred Funk had achieved 62s when the tournament was held at The Woodlands.

Scheffler acknowledged that maintaining momentum was crucial, stating, “It was a quick turnaround. It's always like that when you go late-early and yeah, it was nice to keep a clean card again today. That's always good to keep momentum in the round.” This achievement marked Scheffler's first bogey-free performance through 36 holes since the 2023 American Express tournament.

Scheffler's 62 was his lowest PGA Tour round since a closing 62 at the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship, demonstrating his consistent ability to deliver exceptional performances.

Scheffler Builds Momentum Ahead of Masters

In his final tune-up for the Masters, Scottie Scheffler got off to a strong start, birdying the 10th and 11th holes to set the tone for his round. “It was nice to get off to a good start and hold the momentum and keep a clean card,” Scheffler said. He began with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole and followed it up with a birdie on the par-3 11th from just beyond 26 feet.

Scheffler credited his momentum to a combination of good drives, iron shots, and clutch putting. “The first hole I hit a good drive up the fairway and had a nice look for birdie. It was kind of a tricky read and got that read right. On the next hole, hit a good iron shot, had about a 25-footer and it's nice anytime you see one of those go in. It was good momentum to start the day.”

Scheffler's solid play continued throughout the round, with birdies on the 16th, 17th, second, fifth, seventh, and eighth holes. Despite feeling that his ball-striking could have been better, Scheffler was pleased with his overall performance. “Today was a day where I felt like my ball-striking could have been a bit better and I was able to hole some putts,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler acknowledged that his putting was key to his success, allowing him to compensate for slightly off-target iron shots. “I hit a lot of greens but I felt like my irons were just barely off, and I felt like I could have been hitting them a little bit closer to the hole, but overall kept it on the green, kept giving myself looks. The way I was putting, I didn't feel I had to force 'em there by many pins if I wasn't totally comfortable with the shot, so good results.”
