Nigeria Revive World Cup Hopes with 2-0 Victory Over Rwanda

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a vital 2-0 win over Rwanda in their World Cup qualifying match, thanks to a brace from Victor Osimhen. The victory propels Nigeria to fourth place in the standings with six points.

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a crucial win against Rwanda in Kigali, revitalizing their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying hopes. Prior to this match, Nigeria had struggled in Group C, failing to win any of their first four games, with three draws and one loss relegating them to fifth place in the standings.

A win against Rwanda was imperative for Nigeria, especially given their recent struggles against the Amavubi. The Super Eagles had failed to emerge victorious in their last two encounters with Rwanda, suffering a loss and a draw. However, they were determined to change their fortunes and strengthen their World Cup qualification prospects.

The Super Eagles delivered a convincing performance, defeating Rwanda 2-0 and taking a significant step towards securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. This vital victory marks a turning point in Nigeria's qualifying campaign, as they aim to climb the Group C standings and book their ticket to the World Cup.

Erik Chelle, Nigeria's new head coach, opted for a 4-4-2 formation in their match against Rwanda, pairing Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman up front. The Super Eagles sought to assert their dominance from the outset, and an early goal was crucial to setting the tone.

In the 11th minute, Nigeria's persistence paid off as they scored their first goal from an inswinging free kick. Lookman delivered a well-placed set piece, which Osimhen expertly met at the far post, unleashing a powerful strike that found the back of the net.

Nigeria doubled their advantage on the cusp of halftime, courtesy of Osimhen's quick thinking. He seized upon a loose ball, dispossessing a Rwanda defender, and then found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. With aplomb, Osimhen chipped the ball over the shot-stopper, securing his second goal of the match.

In the second half, Chelle's side maintained control of the game, effectively stifling Rwanda's attacking endeavors. Although the Super Eagles were unable to add to their tally, their two-goal cushion proved sufficient to secure a comfortable victory.

With the final whistle, Nigeria's Super Eagles jumped to fourth place in the standings with six points. They will now shift their focus to their upcoming match against Zimbabwe, scheduled to take place in Uyo.
