LaLiga: Barcelona Reassert Dominance with 4-1 Win Over Girona
Robert Lewandowski scored a brace as Barcelona defeated Girona 4-1 to extend their lead at the top of LaLiga.
Robert Lewandowski's impressive brace propelled Barcelona to a resounding 4-1 victory over Girona, maintaining his pursuit of a second LaLiga and Pichichi Trophy double in three years. This win reinstated Barcelona's three-point advantage at the top of the table.
Barcelona seized the initiative at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, capitalizing on the opportunity presented by Real Madrid's dramatic win over Leganes the previous evening. The hosts wasted no time in asserting their dominance, setting the tone for a convincing victory.
Fermin Lopez initiated the scoring threats, only to see his effort blocked by a Girona defender inside the box. Robert Lewandowski then tested Paulo Gazzaniga with a shot aimed at the bottom-right corner, but the goalkeeper made a solid save to deny him. Shortly after, Girona narrowly escaped conceding a penalty when Yáser Asprilla appeared to foul Lopez inside the box, but the initial decision to award a free kick on the edge of the area was upheld following a VAR review.
Despite the free kick yielding no tangible result, Barcelona maintained control of the tempo. Ronald Araujo came close to scoring in the 21st minute, but his header from a corner was instinctively palmed away by Gazzaniga. As the first half drew to a close, Girona seemed to have successfully weathered the storm. However, fate intervened when Yangel Herrera conceded a free kick on the edge of the box. The ensuing delivery was diverted into the net by Ladislav Krejci, who capitalized on Lamine Yamal's apparent header past Gazzaniga.
Girona unexpectedly equalized eight minutes into the second half, catching Barcelona off guard. A careless giveaway by Ronald Araujo on the right flank put Barcelona under pressure, and Daley Blind seized the opportunity. He pounced on the loose ball and delivered an incisive pass that released Arnaut Danjuma into a scoring position, allowing him to level the score.
Arnaut Danjuma showcased his pace, effortlessly beating Ronald Araujo and firing into the Barcelona net for his fourth LaLiga goal of the season. However, Barcelona regained their composure and resumed their dominance just after the hour mark. Following Eric Garcia's attempt that struck the post, a series of passes culminated in Gavi delivering a cross to the far post, where Fermin Lopez cleverly headed the ball across goal. Robert Lewandowski, ever the opportunist, leapt high to direct the ball under Paulo Gazzaniga, bringing his LaLiga tally to 24 goals and cementing his position at the top of the scoring charts.

Barcelona's propensity to score three or more goals in a game – a feat they have achieved in 13 of their 28 league matches – made a convincing victory over Girona a likely outcome. Having thrashed Girona 4-1 in September, Barcelona were expected to deliver a similarly dominant performance. Lewandowski met these expectations, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack that enabled Frenkie De Jong to release him inside the box. With his trademark composure, Lewandowski placed an unstoppable shot into the opposite corner, effectively sealing the win.
The scoring was completed when Ferran Torres mirrored the reverse head-to-head scoreline from the September meeting. Torres received a squared pass from Gerard Martin on the left and nonchalantly controlled the ball before slotting it past Gazzaniga. As a result, Barcelona will enter April in a prime position to secure their 28th LaLiga title. Conversely, Girona will aim to swiftly forget this encounter, having been thoroughly outclassed from start to finish. This defeat marked their eighth loss in 11 away fixtures across all competitions, with only one win and two draws in that span.
