PSV Eindhoven will face Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16 for the third consecutive season after being drawn together in Friday's draw.



PSV Eindhoven, the reigning Eredivisie champions, have been drawn against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 for the third consecutive season. This matchup follows PSV's impressive comeback victory over Juventus, securing their spot in the round of 16.


PSV's journey to the round of 16 was marked by a thrilling upset win over Juventus. After losing the first leg 2-1 in Turin, PSV bounced back with a victory in Eindhoven, sealed by Ryan Flamingo's goal in extra time. This win propelled PSV into the round of 16 for the second consecutive year.


In the round of 16, PSV will face Premier League side Arsenal for the third straight season. This familiar matchup presents an exciting challenge for PSV as they aim to advance further in the Champions League.


PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal have a recent history of competition, having faced each other ten times this century, including four matches in the last two seasons. Their most recent encounters took place in the 2022/23 Europa League season, where they split the wins, with Arsenal winning 1-0 in London and PSV winning 2-0 in Eindhoven.




The two teams met again last season, with Arsenal emerging unbeaten after a 4-0 win in Eindhoven and a 1-1 draw in the Philips Stadion. The teams also clashed in the 2007 Champions League, where PSV knocked Arsenal out with a 1-0 win in the second leg, following a 1-1 draw in London. Ecuadorian midfielder Edison Mendez scored the decisive goal, crushing Arsenal's hopes with a powerful long-range strike.


Arsenal qualified directly for the round of 16 after finishing third in the league phase, boasting the second-best defense in the competition, having conceded just three goals in eight matches. The only team with a better defensive record was Inter, who conceded just one goal. The playing dates for the upcoming matches have not been officially announced, but PSV have requested that the first leg be scheduled for Wednesday, March 5th, in Eindhoven.




PSV's request is motivated by a desire to alleviate pressure on the police force, as the carnival festival is expected to attract thousands of people. The return leg will be played one week later at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, with the exact date to be confirmed as either March 11th or 12th.
