LaLiga: Girona Suffer Home Defeat as Getafe Revive Top-Six Hopes
Getafe revived their top-six hopes with a 2-1 victory over Girona, who suffered their first home league defeat in five head-to-head meetings.
Getafe claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Girona at the Estádio Municipal de Montilivi, extending their unbeaten LaLiga run to six matches. The win marked a significant milestone for the visitors, who continued their impressive form.
A crucial error by Ladislav Krejčí early on proved costly for Girona. Krejčí's slip allowed Juan Iglesias to gain possession and quickly find Christantus Uche, who clinically finished into the bottom-left corner to give Getafe the lead within five minutes.
Girona sought to bounce back, driven by their ambition to secure consecutive wins over Getafe for the first time. Bryan Gil and Christian Stuani posed threats, but their efforts failed to truly test David Soria in the Getafe goal. Despite this, Girona remained determined to turn the match around.
As the second half unfolded, Getafe faced a stern test of their consistency, having yet to score in both halves of a LaLiga away game this season. Girona capitalized on this, equalizing just before the hour mark through Yangel Herrera's well-directed header from Viktor Tsygankov's corner kick.

Viktor Tsygankov soon posed another threat, testing David Soria with a diving header. However, it was Getafe who struck next, courtesy of José Bordalás' tactical masterstroke. The introduction of Borja Mayoral proved instantaneously effective, as the striker converted a rebound from close range with only his second touch after coming on, stunning the home crowd.
Girona's fortunes took a turn for the worse as Yangel Herrera received his marching orders following a VAR review. His cynical challenge on Ramon Terrats, which caught the Getafe player painfully on the ankle, left the referee no choice. Down to 10 men, Girona's prospects of a comeback dwindled, particularly given their struggles to score multiple goals in recent league outings.
The numerical disadvantage ultimately proved too much for Girona to overcome. Míchel's side suffered their first home league defeat in five head-to-head meetings, while Getafe celebrated a hard-fought victory – only their seventh of the campaign. The win narrowed the gap between Getafe and the top six to five points, reigniting their hopes of a strong finish to the season.
