Garrett Hampson, a Reno High School graduate, has signed a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, marking a homecoming for the versatile utilityman.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed utilityman Garrett Hampson to a minor-league deal, marking a homecoming for the 30-year-old Reno High School graduate. Hampson will begin the season with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces.
Hampson's versatility is one of his greatest strengths, as evidenced by his performance last season with the Kansas City Royals. He played every position except catcher, logging significant time in center field (52 games), left field (28 games), and second base (24 games). Hampson also made appearances at first base, shortstop, right field, third base, and even pitched in one game.

Despite his impressive defensive range, Hampson's offense took a step back last season. He slashed .230/.275/.300/.576, with a notable decrease in production compared to his previous season with the Miami Marlins. Hampson failed to hit a home run and managed just 16 RBI, along with seven stolen bases.
The signing marks a new chapter in Hampson's eight-year career, which has seen him suit up for three previous teams. Originally drafted by the Washington Nationals out of high school, Hampson opted to attend California State University, Long Beach before being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He spent five seasons with the Rockies before moving on to the Marlins and eventually the Royals.
The Diamondbacks, who finished third in the National League West division with an 89-73 record last season, will be looking to Hampson to provide depth and versatility to their roster.
