Yankees Fans Face Indefinite Ban for Interfering with Play in World Series

MLB has taken action against two Yankees fans who grabbed the ball from Mookie Betts' glove during a World Series game, banning them indefinitely.

Two New York Yankees fans have been indefinitely banned from all MLB stadiums and facilities for interfering with a play during last year's World Series. Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen grabbed Mookie Betts' glove and pried the ball loose as he attempted to make a catch in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium. “On October 29, 2024, during Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, you interfered with play by intentionally and forcefully grabbing a player,” an MLB official wrote in a letter to the two fans.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the first inning when Betts leaped into the front row of the seating area to catch a fly ball from Gleyber Torres. One fan grabbed Betts' glove with both hands, while the other held Betts' right hand. The umpires ultimately called Torres out due to fan interference on the play.

The MLB official's letter emphasized the severity of the fans' actions, stating, “Your conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player and went far over the line of acceptable fan behavior.” As a result, the two fans have been banned indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and facilities, as well as from attending any events sponsored by or associated with MLB.

The letter concluded with a stern warning, stating, “Please be advised that if you are discovered at any MLB property or event, you will be removed from the premises and subject to arrest for trespass.” The Yankees won the game 11-4 but ultimately lost the World Series to the Dodgers in five games.
