Tyreek Hill, Dolphins Coach Clear the Air After Wide Receiver's Exit

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has apologized for leaving a game early and has committed to accountability after a conversation with coach Mike McDaniel.

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier has clarified the situation surrounding wide receiver Tyreek Hill's recent comments. In a statement released on Tuesday, Grier asserted that Hill never requested a trade with him, despite the player's “I'm out” remark to the media over the weekend.

Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel convened on Monday to discuss the matter. During this conversation, they presumably addressed Hill's sentiments, which were made public after the team's recent game. Hill's statements suggested a strong desire to leave Miami, with the wide receiver indicating that he is ready to move on to his next destination.

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier shared his thoughts on the conversations he had with wide receiver Tyreek Hill regarding his recent comments. “They were (productive) conversations,” Grier said at the team's end-of-the-year press conference. “I will keep those between us. The one thing I would say is, in a frustrating season, he was very emotional in a game where we had a chance, coming back from 2-6. All of that with him playing through his (wrist) injury just kind of bubbled to a point.”

Head coach Mike McDaniel also met with Hill to discuss the situation, and he characterized their conversation as straightforward and honest. “I was very direct with him,” McDaniel said. “He was very honest, and it was great terms that we were discussing.” Following their conversation, Hill posted a photoshopped image on social media, superimposing his face over former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown's body during a game where Brown infamously walked off the field. Hill later changed his profile picture back to his regular one.

Head coach Mike McDaniel discussed the details of his conversation with wide receiver Tyreek Hill, emphasizing the importance of accountability and acceptable behavior. “We discussed multiple things, including without wavering, that it's not acceptable to leave a game and won't be tolerated in the future, and he embraced accountability,” McDaniel explained. “I wouldn't say there's necessarily anything to fix, but we had to clear the air in a rough and tumultuous situation.”

Hill's performance this season has been somewhat subdued compared to his previous years. He accumulated 939 receiving yards, his lowest total since 2019 when he recorded 860 yards. Additionally, his six receiving touchdowns are the lowest since his rookie season. Notably, this season marks the first time Hill has not been selected to the Pro Bowl after earning a spot in each of his first eight years in the league. Hill has also received All-Pro honors five times in his career, including the past two years, but is unlikely to receive this recognition again after this season. Furthermore, Hill was involved in an incident with law enforcement earlier this season, being handcuffed during a traffic stop.

In terms of his contract, Hill is currently signed to a three-year, $90 million deal with the Dolphins, with the 2025 season still under contract. However, he has an opt-out option available for the 2026 season. According to Spotrac, Hill's cap hit for the 2025 season is $28.6 million.
