Sinner Extends Win Streak to 17, Sets Up Clash with Holger Rune
Defending champion Jannik Sinner eased into the Australian Open last 16 with a convincing straight-sets win over Marcos Giron, extending his win streak to 17 matches.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner was in top form on Saturday, cruising into the last 16 of the Australian Open with a dominant straight-sets victory over American Marcos Giron. The Italian world number one, who had dropped a set for the first time in 14 matches in his previous round, was unstoppable on Rod Laver Arena, securing a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win in just over two hours.
Sinner's impressive performance was marked by 35 winners and eight aces, leaving Giron struggling to keep up. The Italian's victory sets up a intriguing clash with Danish 13th seed Holger Rune, who edged Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in a thrilling five-set encounter. Sinner will be looking to extend his impressive 17-match win streak, which dates back to his defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing in October.
Following his victory, Sinner expressed his satisfaction with the win, saying, “Very happy to be in the next round. Every match has its own difficulties. Today I felt like he was very solid from the back of the court, he served well.” Despite his convincing win, Sinner acknowledged that he still has room for improvement, adding, “I still have room to improve, but every win is great. Trying to stay there mentally, which I think is the most important aspect for us tennis players.”
Sinner also emphasized the importance of mental toughness in tennis, stating, “But for sure, if I want to go on in this tournament I have to improve.” As he prepares to face Rune in the next round, Sinner will be looking to maintain his focus and continue his winning streak.

Jannik Sinner asserted his dominance from the outset against Marcos Giron, breaking the American's first service game to set the tone for the match. Despite committing 11 unforced errors, two more than Giron, Sinner's early break proved sufficient to secure the first set.
Sinner adopted a more patient approach in the second set, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. That moment arrived in the fifth game, when he crafted two break points and capitalized on Giron's errant forehand to take a 3-2 lead. From there, Sinner took control of the rallies, leaving Giron struggling to find a foothold.

The Italian's backhand winner earned him another break in the third set, moving him 2-0 clear and seemingly poised for a straightforward victory. However, Giron, ranked 46, refused to yield, breaking Sinner's serve for the first time in the match to level the set at 2-2. This brief resurgence from Giron appeared to galvanize Sinner, who promptly broke back and proceeded to win the next four games, sealing the match in convincing fashion.
