Robert Saleh Emerges as Candidate for 49ers Defensive Coordinator
The San Francisco 49ers interviewed former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh for their defensive coordinator position on Thursday.
The San Francisco 49ers conducted interviews for their defensive coordinator position on Thursday, meeting with two prominent candidates. Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, 45, was among those interviewed, as the 49ers consider him for the role he previously held from 2017 to 2020.
Saleh's tenure as the 49ers' defensive coordinator was marked by significant improvement. During his four-year stint, the team's defense rose through the ranks, finishing 24th in 2017, 13th in 2018, 2nd in 2019, and 5th in 2020. Saleh's experience and familiarity with the organization make him a strong candidate for the position.
In addition to Saleh, the 49ers also interviewed Deshea Townsend, the Detroit Lions' defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator. As the 49ers continue their search for a defensive coordinator, these interviews mark a significant step in the process.
Robert Saleh's tenure with the New York Jets came to an end after a 2-3 start to the season. During his nearly four-year stint with the team, Saleh compiled a combined record of 20-36.
The San Francisco 49ers parted ways with defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen on January 7th. Despite his departure from the defensive coordinator role, the 49ers are reportedly interested in retaining Sorensen in another position on the staff. Sorensen's defensive unit ranked 8th overall in his first year as coordinator, with notable rankings in passing defense (5th) and rushing defense (18th). However, the team struggled in scoring defense, ranking 29th.
Aubrey Pleasant, formerly of the Detroit Lions, is also a candidate for the 49ers' defensive coordinator position. During his first season with the Lions, the team's pass defense ranked 30th. However, it's worth noting that the Lions' defense was severely impacted by injuries throughout the season. Pleasant previously served in the same role with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022 and 2023, with the team ranking 28th and 26th in pass defense, respectively.
