Rob Edwards Departs Luton Town Amid Poor Run of Results

Luton Town has announced the departure of manager Rob Edwards by mutual agreement, following a disappointing run of results in the Championship.

Rob Edwards has parted ways with Luton Town after a three-year tenure, with the Championship club citing a disappointing run of results.

Edwards took the reins at Kenilworth Road in November 2022 and achieved immediate success, securing promotion to the Premier League in his debut season via a dramatic penalty shootout win over Coventry.

However, Luton's stay in the top flight was short-lived, as they suffered relegation in May last year. The team's struggles have continued in the Championship, with the Hatters currently languishing in 20th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

Luton announced Edwards' departure in a statement, revealing that the decision was made by mutual agreement following discussions with the board. The statement read: “After holding amicable talks following Monday's defeat at QPR, the board and Rob have agreed to part with immediate effect.”

Luton chief executive Gary Sweet paid tribute to departing manager Rob Edwards, praising his contributions to the club. Sweet acknowledged that Edwards, 42, had “given us some of our greatest days to celebrate as Hatters.”

Sweet explained that the decision to part ways with Edwards was due to the team's poor performance this season, particularly away from home. “Results this season, especially away from home, have clearly not been acceptable and while we have supported Rob and his team in every possible way, we all felt that action was required to rectify this with 20 league matches still to play,” Sweet stated.

Sweet commended Edwards for his humility and recognition of the need for change. “It is typical of Rob's humility that he also recognised this himself and leaves not just as a former manager but as a trusted friend who has left his mark on every player and member of staff,” Sweet said.
