Rio Ferdinand: Amorim's Comments on Rashford an 'Embarrassment'

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Ruben Amorim's comments on Marcus Rashford, calling them an 'embarrassment' and believes the player has no future at Manchester United.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed his disappointment and embarrassment over Ruben Amorim's recent comments about Marcus Rashford. Amorim, Manchester United's manager, made a scathing remark about Rashford's effort in training, stating that he would rather have his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vital, in the matchday squad.

Ferdinand believes that Rashford has no future at Manchester United following Amorim's comments. Rashford has been left out of the squad for every game since December 12, apart from one match where he was an unused substitute. Amorim's decision to omit Rashford from the squad has raised questions about the player's future at the club.

Amorim's comments about Rashford's effort in training have been widely criticized, with many seeing them as an unnecessary and public attack on the player. When asked about Rashford's exclusion from the squad for Sunday's 1-0 win at Fulham, Amorim said, “The reason is the training, what I think a footballer should do in training, in life and every day... I will put (in) Vital before I put (in) a player who doesn't give the maximum every day.” This remark has been seen as a stinging rebuke of Rashford's attitude and work ethic.

Amorim's comments are the latest in a series of bombastic remarks since he took charge of Manchester United in November. His public criticism of Rashford has raised concerns about the player's future at the club and has led to speculation about a possible transfer.

Rio Ferdinand, a former Manchester United defender, has expressed his disappointment and embarrassment over Ruben Amorim's comments about Marcus Rashford. Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League during his 12-year career at Old Trafford, said he would be embarrassed by such a statement. “If I was that player that the manager said that about... embarrassment,” he said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

Ferdinand believes that Amorim's comments about Rashford's effort in training are a damning indictment of the player's character. “We all have days off or moments when we're not performing well, lacking confidence, but effort isn't really one of the things I would want to be hearing a manager say is lacking in my makeup,” Ferdinand said. He also suggested that Amorim's comments were deliberate and calculated to have a specific impact. “That's a damning comment, because I think he knows what the reaction is after that comment. He's not saying that without thinking, 'Where does this go after?'”

Ferdinand believes that Amorim's comments have made it impossible for Rashford to continue at Manchester United. “There's really no way back for Marcus after that, I don't think, with that type of comment,” he said. Rashford had previously stated that he was “ready for a new challenge” in December, but with just one week left in the January transfer window, his future remains uncertain. Several European giants, including Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan, have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old, who has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for United.

However, any potential move for Rashford is complicated by his reported £300,000-a-week salary on a deal that runs until 2028. This significant financial commitment may deter potential suitors, leaving Rashford in limbo as the transfer window draws to a close.
