Newcastle United Coach Eddie Howe Confident Ahead of Arsenal Clash
Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe has called on his team to maintain their strong form when they face Arsenal in the Carabao League Cup semi-finals.
Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe is urging his team to keep up their impressive form as they face Arsenal in the League Cup semi-finals. Howe emphasized the importance of staying focused and not getting complacent, especially given their strong run of six consecutive wins across all competitions.
Those victories include notable triumphs over Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, showcasing Newcastle's resilience and determination. As they head into the crucial League Cup meeting with Arsenal, Howe's message is clear: maintain the momentum and make the most of this opportunity. The first leg of the semi-finals is set to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, with kickoff scheduled for 8 pm GMT.
Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe believes that striker Alexander Isak's impressive goalscoring run is, in part, due to the team's overall performance. “Alex will naturally (feel like scoring), when you are on the run of goalscoring games that he is,” Howe said. He emphasized that the team's creative play has been instrumental in providing Isak with scoring opportunities. “The team is creating for him, the team is playing in a really good way for Alex and others. Alex is playing his part in that by finishing them off but the team is playing great and creating the chances for him.”

The Magpies have also received a significant boost with the return of defender Sven Botman, who made his comeback against Tottenham Hotspur after undergoing anterior cruciate ligament surgery in March. When asked if Botman would start against Arsenal, Howe said that a decision would be made in consultation with the player and medical experts. “We have to speak to the player, the medical team, the experts. They'll give me some of the answers to what we do with him next.”
Howe expressed confidence in Botman's ability to perform, citing his strong work ethic and drive. “Sven is a competitor. He is hugely driven for the team and himself. He wants to do really well in his career so I've got no doubts what he will say,” Howe noted. However, the manager also acknowledged the need to carefully manage Botman's return to action. “He feels good, naturally a little bit of fatigue at the end. He has trained for a long, long time for this moment. It is not like he has been rushed back. Straight into action, he did very well.”
Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe emphasized the significance of their upcoming League Cup semi-final clash with Arsenal, stressing that his team must deliver a top-notch performance. “This is an important game for us. We need to be at our absolute best, a high-level game. There is a lot at stake for us,” Howe told reporters ahead of the first-leg match at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
Howe outlined the key areas where Newcastle need to excel, highlighting the importance of defensive solidity and causing problems for Arsenal's defense. “We've got to be really good off the ball and solid defensively. We've got to cause Arsenal problems the other way,” he said. Rather than overcomplicating their approach, Howe advocated for a balanced performance. “I don't think we should overthink it, we just need to get that mix right. Let's try and continue the good performances we've given recently and try and win the game.”
Howe also praised striker Alexander Isak, who extended his impressive goalscoring run to seven successive Premier League games in Newcastle's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. However, the manager was quick to attribute Isak's success to the team's collective effort.
