Illness Rules Out Rashford for Manchester United's Trip to Liverpool
Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will miss Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool due to illness, head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed.
Rashford, 27, has recently struggled to regain his place in the team. He was omitted from the squad for four consecutive matches before being named as a substitute for Monday's 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford's absence from the pitch continued, as he didn't play a single minute against Newcastle United. Manchester United's struggles in the league have been evident, with five losses in their last six games. This poor run of form has left them languishing in 14th place in the standings, with 22 points from 19 matches. Alarmingly, this is their worst position at the end of a calendar year since 1989, when they were 15th.
Head coach Ruben Amorim provided an update on Rashford's status ahead of the Liverpool game, citing illness as the reason for his continued absence. “It's the same situation. At the moment he is ill, he is not training,” Amorim told reporters.
Ruben Amorim's decision to initially leave Marcus Rashford out of the squad came ahead of the 2-1 derby win at Manchester City on December 15. Interestingly, this move coincided with Rashford's statement, made just two days later, expressing his readiness for “a new challenge” after spending his entire career at Manchester United since joining the club at the age of seven.
Marcus Rashford has enjoyed a storied career at Manchester United, scoring 138 goals in 426 appearances since his senior debut in 2016. His trophy cabinet includes the Europa League, two FA Cups, and the League Cup twice. When asked about Rashford's current situation, Amorim downplayed the issue, saying, “We will see in the future, but this is like a normal player, then I make a selection. So, it's the same. I think he is going to be out - this week he is out.”
