Frenkie de Jong Opens Up on Barcelona Disappointment, Contract Renewal, and Ankle Injury
In an interview with @VI_nl, Frenkie de Jong shared his honest thoughts on his time at Barcelona, expressing disappointment at the club's trophy haul, discussing his contract renewal, and revealing the challenges he faced during his ankle injury.
In a candid interview with @VI_nl, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong reflected on his four-year tenure at the club, admitting that he had expected more success. “When I signed for Barcelona, I didn't imagine to win only a La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup after 4 years,” De Jong said. “I expected at least double, so that disappoints me. Things happen on the road you can't predict.”
Frenkie De Jong also addressed speculation about his future at the club, emphasizing that his commitment to Barcelona is not solely driven by his personal life. “People think I want to stay at Barça forever because life outside football is so good here, and it IS good, but it's less important to what happens on the pitch,” he explained. “If I'd feel that I can't contribute enough, or the team can't compete, I'd be gone.”
Regarding his contract renewal, De Jong downplayed the significance of the issue, stating that his focus remains on playing football. “My contract renewal is an issue for the papers here, but for me, it's not,” he said. “I want to play football, and after that, I will see what the club wants to do with me, and then I will decide what I want to do, together with my agent and family.”
De Jong also opened up about the challenges he faced during his ankle injury, describing it as the most difficult year of his career. “In the beginning phase of my ankle injury, I was busy with my ankle day and night,” he revealed. “It's been the most difficult year for me. As soon as I woke up, I'd immediately feel it: Has it gotten bigger? Is there a reaction? I have to take my ankle into account.”
