EPL: Crystal Palace Suffer First Defeat of 2025 Against Brentford

Brentford secured a hard-fought 2-1 Premier League win at Crystal Palace, thanks to second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade. This victory marked Brentford's first league double over Crystal Palace since the 1955/56 season. The Bees' win at Selhurst Park was a testament to their resilience and determination.


Crystal Palace started the match confidently, dominating possession in the early stages. Eberechi Eze nearly provided his fifth league assist of the season with a clever back-heeled through ball to Jean-Philippe Mateta. However, Mateta's resulting strike towards the top corner was saved by Mark Flekken. The opening 25 minutes were largely uneventful, with neither side able to generate significant attacking momentum.


Brentford's Yoane Wissa eventually broke the deadlock in terms of chances, shooting towards the bottom corner from 20 yards. However, Dean Henderson made a full-stretch save to deny Wissa. This opportunity seemed to spark Brentford into life, and they began to look more likely to open the scoring. Bryan Mbeumo's powerful free-kick beat Henderson but narrowly missed the post.


The match opened up in the final stages of the first half, with Eze afforded space to strike from the edge of the area. However, his tame finish failed to test Flekken, and the teams went into halftime level at 0-0. This was Crystal Palace's third consecutive league match where they were drawing 0-0 at halftime.


Crystal Palace regained control in the second half, and Eze's free-kick took a significant deflection off Sepp van den Berg's thigh, clipping the outside of the post. Despite this near-miss, Palace were unable to capitalize on their momentum, and Brentford eventually made the breakthrough.


The second half began with an intense, end-to-end tempo, and Brentford were soon awarded a penalty when Maxence Lacroix fouled Nathan Collins inside the Crystal Palace area. However, Bryan Mbeumo failed to capitalize on the opportunity, striking the post with his initial penalty attempt.


Mbeumo was given a second chance, though, as Marc Guehi was penalized for encroachment, and the Cameroonian made no mistake this time around. He fired his third away goal in two games past Dean Henderson, giving Brentford a crucial lead. This goal marked a turning point in the match, as Brentford's confidence grew, and they began to take control.



Brentford sealed the win 10 minutes from time, courtesy of a well-crafted goal. Mikkel Damsgaard's precise cross picked out Kevin Schade, who rose above the Palace defense to send a powerful header into the net. This goal ensured that Brentford would take all three points, despite a late scare from the hosts.


Although they were comprehensively beaten, Crystal Palace managed to give Brentford a late fright. Debutant Romain Esse scored with his first touch in a Palace shirt, tapping in from Daniel Munoz's low cross. However, this late goal was mere consolation, as Palace struggled to regain any foothold in the contest after conceding the late double. Ultimately, they suffered their first defeat of 2025.


Led by top scorer Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford took their chances efficiently, and Thomas Frank's side can now look back with pride on a run of successive Premier League away wins for the first time since 2023. This victory marked a significant milestone for the Bees, who continue to defy expectations and push for a strong finish to the season.
