Conceicao's Dream Start: AC Milan Win Italian Super Cup

Sergio Conceicao's AC Milan staged a dramatic comeback to win the Italian Super Cup, capping an incredible first week for the new manager.

Sergio Conceicao has made a remarkable start to his tenure as AC Milan manager, culminating in the team's Italian Super Cup triumph on Monday. Conceicao's first week in charge has been nothing short of eventful, featuring two comeback victories, a battle with a fever, an injury, and even a celebratory cigar in the dressing room.

Conceicao took the reins at AC Milan last Monday, replacing the sacked Paulo Fonseca. Despite struggling with illness and a high temperature, Conceicao demonstrated his dedication by taking his place on the bench for the semi-final clash against Juventus on Friday. His presence seemed to inspire the team, as Milan secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over their rivals.

AC Milan's Italian Super Cup victory was a testament to the team's resilience, as they came from behind to defeat Inter Milan 3-2 in the final. This was not the first time Milan had faced a deficit under Conceicao's leadership, having previously overcome a one-goal disadvantage to beat Juventus in the semi-finals.

Sergio Conceicao praised his team's character and ability to bounce back against tough opponents. "“The team has character, it managed to win games against two great teams in the end,” Conceicao told Mediaset. He also acknowledged his own role in making strategic adjustments during the game. “At half-time, the coach has to change certain things, that's why they pay me,” Conceicao added, highlighting his tactical influence on the team's comeback victory.

AC Milan's fighting spirit was on full display as they came back from a two-goal deficit to level the score at 2-2. With the match heading into penalties in added time, Tammy Abraham scored a dramatic winning goal, sending the Milan players and staff into jubilation. Conceicao, visibly emotional, celebrated with his team at the final whistle.

However, Conceicao's celebrations were momentarily interrupted as he required treatment on the bench for an injury sustained during the festivities. With a laugh, Conceicao revealed that the injury was courtesy of Emerson Royal's overzealous celebration. “Emerson Royal made a red card tackle on me,” Conceicao joked.

Conceicao praised his players for their resilience and ability to adapt to his tactics, despite having limited time to work together. “I'm very happy for the players because it wasn't easy, we had little time to work on the details that were important to me,” he said. “The credit is all theirs because they absorbed my indications. There is still a lot of work, but with humility, we can do well in the Champions League and in the league.”

Sergio Conceicao's personality has been a topic of discussion, with the manager himself describing his serious demeanor. However, after AC Milan's Italian Super Cup victory, Conceicao let his hair down and celebrated with his team in style. In the dressing room, he was seen dancing and smoking a cigar, a ritual he reserves for special occasions.

Conceicao revealed that his players had encouraged him to smoke the cigar, knowing it was a tradition he observed when winning a title. “At the end of the game, the players immediately told me that I had to smoke a cigar; they knew that I do this ritual when I lift a title,” Conceicao told a press conference.

The Italian Super Cup is Conceicao's 13th title as a coach, and he acknowledged the significance of the achievement. “It's my 13th title as a coach; I'm happy, and it has a special flavor for me.”
