The Chicago Bears are nearing a deal to appoint Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator, as their new head coach. Johnson, 38, has been instrumental in shaping the Lions' high-powered offense, which ranked as the top-scoring unit in the NFL this season, averaging 33.2 points per game.
Johnson's tenure with the Lions came to an end following their unexpected 45-31 home loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round game on Saturday. The Bears, meanwhile, are seeking to revamp their team after a disappointing season, which saw them finish last in the NFC North. Despite starting the campaign with four wins in their first six games, the Bears endured a dismal losing streak, prompting the dismissal of head coach Matt Eberflus in late November.

Under Johnson's guidance, the Lions' offense flourished, ranking among the top five in both scoring and overall offense for three consecutive years. In contrast, the Bears struggled to find their footing on offense, finishing with the joint fourth-fewest points per game (18.2). Johnson's primary objective will be to revitalize the Bears' offense and restore the team's competitiveness.
Johnson's experience as the Lions' offensive coordinator, a position he assumed in 2022, has equipped him with the expertise to spearhead the Bears' resurgence. His success in Detroit, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the team's offense, has earned him the opportunity to lead the Bears as their new head coach.
