Australia Names Travis Head as Opener for Sri Lanka Test Series
Travis Head will open the batting for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka, replacing Sam Konstas, as the visitors look to tackle the spin-friendly conditions in Galle.
Travis Head is set to open the batting for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle on Wednesday, replacing Sam Konstas as Usman Khawaja's opening partner. This decision was announced by Australia's stand-in captain, Steve Smith, on the eve of the match. Konstas, who made a promising debut as an opener against India, may be accommodated in the middle order following Head's promotion.
According to Smith, Head's ability to handle spin, as demonstrated during Australia's 2023 tour of India, makes him an ideal candidate to open the batting against a spin-heavy Sri Lankan side. Smith expressed his confidence in Head's ability, saying, “Trav will go to the top, outside of that I think it will be pretty stable.” He added, “I don't see it being a great deal of change from that.”
Smith revealed that the selectors were impressed with Head's performance in India, where he showcased his ability to score quickly and put pressure on the opposition. Smith explained, “The selectors liked what they saw in India when he had that opportunity. He got after the new ball, scored quickly and put the pressure on them straight away, so I guess similar thinking here.” This suggests that Head's aggressive approach to batting will be an asset for Australia in the series against Sri Lanka.
Thompson's Game-Winner Lifts Rockets Over Celtics
Travis Head's impressive form as the leading scorer in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series has earned him a spot in Australia's Test squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Despite the emergence of teenage opener Jason Konstas, who impressed in the last two Tests against India, the Australian selectors have opted for Head's experience and proven track record.
The two-Test series against Sri Lanka will be a challenging one for Australia, particularly given the spin-friendly conditions in Galle, where both matches will be played. The hosts will rely heavily on their spin attack, led by left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who is expected to pose a significant threat to the Australian batsmen. Australia, however, will be boosted by the return of left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who has been declared fit for the series.

Australia has already secured a spot in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, but they will be looking to maintain their momentum in Sri Lanka. The hosts, meanwhile, will be without the services of Pathum Nissanka, who has been ruled out with a groin strain. However, captain Dhananjaya de Silva, who is recovering from a side strain, is expected to play a key role in the series.
