Arteta Praises Nwaneri's Breakout Performance...
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was effusive in his praise for 17-year-old attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, who made a stunning impact in his first Premier League start against Brentford. Arteta hailed Nwaneri's display as “very impressive” after Arsenal came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.
Nwaneri, who has been part of Arsenal's academy since the age of eight, etched his name into the club's history books by becoming the third-youngest player to start a top-flight game for the Gunners. He follows in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott, who also made their mark on the club at a tender age.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his satisfaction with his team's ability to rise to the challenge despite injuries to key players, including Bukayo Saka.
“The game became very difficult from yesterday because, again, we lost some players and had certain issues around the camp,” Arteta said, as quoted on the club's website. “We had to deal with that, we made some changes, Ethan making his Premier League debut, anyone that you put there, (they had the) right attitude, right level of performance and that sustains the level of the team.”
The away win at Gtech Community Stadium held special significance for Ethan Nwaneri, as it marked a return to the venue where he made history for Arsenal in 2022. On that occasion, Nwaneri came on as a substitute, becoming the youngest player in Premier League history.
“Ethan's played here before, so that's a nice story, to get back to this one, I think he was really composed, really determined, taking risks, taking initiative. Very impressive,” Arteta said, praising Nwaneri's performance and poise under pressure.
The victory over Brentford propelled Arsenal back into second place in the Premier League table, with 39 points from 19 matches, trailing leaders Liverpool by six points. Liverpool also have a game in hand, adding to the complexity of the title race.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reflected on his team's resilience and consistency, saying, “We've been through a lot and the team had to deal with a lot of circumstances, probably that we never expected and they're still performing at the highest level, very consistently.” Arteta also acknowledged that there is room for improvement, stating, “We want to be better, we could've been better, especially just with small margins but I think the team is in the right path.”
