Arsenal Women have announced the appointment of Renee Slegers as their permanent head coach until the end of the season. The 35-year-old Dutchwoman has been in charge of the team on an interim basis since October, following the resignation of Jonas Eidevall. During her tenure, Slegers has overseen an impressive unbeaten run of 11 matches across all competitions.
Slegers, a former Netherlands international, has a strong connection to Arsenal, having spent time at the club's youth academy from 2006 to 2007. Her success with the team has also earned her individual recognition, including the Women's Super League Manager of the Month award in December. Slegers expressed her excitement about the opportunity to continue leading the team, stating: “I'm so excited to be continuing our journey together.”
In a statement, Slegers emphasized her pride and belief in the team's potential. “It's a wonderful honour to represent this club as head coach and I have so much belief in what we can all achieve together,” she said. Slegers also shared her ambitions for the team, highlighting their desire to achieve success and inspire their fans. “We want to deliver something beautiful that's inspiring and leads to winning trophies...” she said. With Slegers at the helm, Arsenal Women will be looking to build on their strong start to the season, which has seen them accumulate 21 points from 10 matches, leaving them third in the Women's Super League. Their next challenge comes on Sunday, when they host bottom side Crystal Palace.
