Amorim Uncertain About Rashford's Manchester United Future
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is unsure if Marcus Rashford will stay at the club beyond the current transfer window.
Ruben Amorim, Manchester United's manager, has expressed uncertainty regarding Marcus Rashford's future at the club. Amorim stated that he is unsure whether the unsettled forward will remain a Manchester United player beyond the current transfer window, which closes on February 3rd.
Rashford, 27, has been absent from Manchester United's squad for 10 games, following Amorim's decision to drop him for the derby win at Manchester City in December. In response to his omission, Rashford hinted at a desire for a “new challenge,” sparking reports that he would be sold by United before the end of the transfer period. Rashford has been linked with several top-tier clubs, including AC Milan, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Chelsea.
Despite training on Wednesday, Rashford watched Manchester United's 2-1 Europa League win over Rangers from a private box on Thursday. Amorim only named nine of the 12 available substitutes, further fueling speculation about Rashford's future. When asked if Rashford could remain at United for the rest of the season, Amorim told reporters, “I don't know. I really don't know. We will see in the end of the window what happened. And then we will talk about it in that moment.”
Ruben Amorim's tenure as Manchester United manager has gotten off to a rocky start, with only three wins from 11 Premier League games in charge. The team's recent 3-1 home defeat by Brighton was a particularly low point, leaving United languishing in 13th place. Amorim's frustration was evident, as he described United as “maybe the worst team” in the club's history after the loss.
Despite his harsh words, Amorim is eager to build a stronger bond with his players. He believes that fostering a sense of belonging is crucial to the team's success. “I think we need that to get that feeling of belonging,” Amorim said. “For that, we also need time to train, to stay together, and that is really important. We don't have that.”
Amorim emphasized the importance of pre-season training in building team cohesion. “Pre-season, creating, spending three weeks together, creating something, and then you want to create something new with the players,” he explained. Amorim wants his players to see him in a different light, beyond the stress of match preparation. “I want them to know me in a different way, not always preparing the matches with stress - we don't have the time to do that. I think it's really important, and I think it's the secret of teams.”

Amorim offered a glimmer of hope to goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was left out of the starting lineup against Rangers following a costly error against Brighton. Onana may return to the starting lineup against Fulham on Sunday. Altay Bayindir deputized in midweek, but Amorim explained that this was a pre-planned rotation. “We have two really good goalkeepers, they need time to play, they need the space in the team, so this rotation was prepared,” he said. Amorim acknowledged that Onana's mistake was a concern, but emphasized that the rotation was part of the team's original plan. “That mistake was my concern, but in the end, we continue with the same plan that we did last week.”
