Manchester United Boss Amorim Labels Himself 'Worst in History'
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has taken responsibility for the team's struggles, labeling himself as possibly the worst in the club's history.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has taken responsibility for his team's struggles, stating that his self-criticism was behind his comment that the team might be the worst in the club's history. This statement came after Sunday's 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
Amorim, who took charge in November, acknowledged that the team's performance has been disappointing, with seven losses in 15 matches. Currently, Manchester United sits 13th in the Premier League. The Portuguese coach expressed his frustration at being unable to help his players achieve better results.
“It's more for me, I was talking more about me than the players,” Amorim clarified in a press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the Europa League clash against Rangers. “I'm frustrated sometimes... I should not say in those terms but it is what it is... sometimes it's really hard to hide the frustration.”
Amorim revealed that he had conveyed a similar message to his players in the dressing room earlier, which elicited a normal response. “So the response was quite normal,” he added. The 39-year-old coach acknowledged that he, too, can make mistakes and is committed to learning from them. "Sometimes you're a young guy and you make mistakes and you improve. I don't promise that I won't do it again, I don't know. So I will try to improve."
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has echoed manager Ruben Amorim's frustration and disappointment following Sunday's 3-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. Maguire acknowledged that the team's confidence was high after their recent victories over Arsenal in the FA Cup and Southampton in the Premier League.
“We had the confidence we could go and beat Brighton. Obviously we didn't perform well on the day, so we've got to look at ourselves and take responsibility,” Maguire stated, emphasizing the need for personal accountability. The defender's sentiments align with Amorim's self-criticism, as both seek to rectify the team's struggles.
Amorim, who is in the process of implementing a new playing style at Manchester United, has cautioned that growing pains are inevitable. “I understood that changing things, we are going to suffer. For me, it was really clear. But in this moment I don't want to say that it's going to take a lot of time. It's getting really hard,” he admitted.
The Portuguese manager acknowledged the cumulative effect of consecutive losses, which has made it challenging for the team to regain momentum. “You get loss after loss, it's really hard for everybody. And I know that sometimes I show that frustration but I don't know that we can change that tomorrow,” Amorim said, conveying his awareness of the difficulties ahead.
