Ajax's Godts Sidelined with Injury as Edvardsen Transfer Talks Intensify
Ajax's injury woes have been compounded by Mika Godts' hamstring setback, prompting the club to accelerate their pursuit of Go Ahead Eagles winger Oliver Edvardsen.
Ajax has reportedly accelerated their pursuit of Go Ahead Eagles winger Oliver Edvardsen, following a hamstring injury to left winger Mika Godts. The 19-year-old Belgian winger was forced to leave the game against Galatasaray after just 13 minutes, prompting Ajax to prioritize Edvardsen's transfer.
According to De Telegraaf's Mike Verweij, Ajax, Go Ahead Eagles, and Edvardsen have agreed on major terms, with the Norwegian forward set to join the Amsterdam side for a reported transfer fee of €3 million. Ajax aims to complete the transfer in time for Edvardsen to join the squad before Sunday's game against Feyenoord.
In addition to Edvardsen's transfer, Ajax is also working on re-signing loaned-out winger Carlos Forbs, according to Voetbal International's Tim van Duijn. However, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Forbs' current team, is seeking to recoup some of the €3 million loan fee from Ajax. The Amsterdam side, however, is reportedly unwilling to pay for Forbs' return.
Ajax has been searching for new forwards since last summer, when moves for Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana and Burnley's Mike Tresor fell through. The Dutch record champions also came close to signing Spanish winger Raul Moro from Real Valladolid, but the deal was scuppered when Moro injured his shoulder. With Edvardsen's transfer on the horizon, Ajax may finally have found the attacking reinforcement they have been seeking.
Ajax's attacking options have been depleted due to an injury sustained by their only left winger, Godts. The Belgian youngster has suffered his second hamstring injury in just a couple of months, having partially torn his hamstring in November. This setback comes at an inopportune time, with the highly anticipated 'Klassieker' derby against Feyenoord looming this Sunday.
Godts has been a valuable contributor to Ajax's squad this season, featuring in 30 games across all competitions. The 19-year-old has scored seven goals and provided three assists, showcasing his potential as a rising star. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, and Ajax will need to find alternative solutions to fill the void left by Godts' injury.
Meanwhile, Ajax has been linked with a potential move for Go Ahead Eagles' standout performer, Edvardsen. The Norwegian forward has been instrumental in his team's success this season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in just fourteen Eredivisie games. Since joining Go Ahead Eagles in 2022, Edvardsen has accounted for 26 goals and five assists in 81 appearances, demonstrating his goal-scoring prowess and potential value to Ajax's attacking lineup.
