New Orleans Pelicans Lose Dejounte Murray to Season-Ending Achilles Tear

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles tendon suffered during Friday's game against the Boston Celtics.

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray's season has come to an abrupt end due to a torn Achilles tendon. The injury occurred during the Pelicans' 118-116 loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday night, when Murray rebounded his own missed shot with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter. Unfortunately, this is not Murray's first experience with a significant injury, having missed the entire 2018-2019 season with a torn ACL.

Pelicans head coach Willie Green expressed his disappointment and concern about Murray's injury, saying, "Extremely difficult, when you see a guy that means so much to our team and puts the work in go down like that." Murray's absence will be deeply felt, as he was leading the team in assists (7.6 per game) and steals (2.1 per game). His scoring average of 17.9 points per game, although the lowest of his career since the 2020-2021 season, was still a significant contribution to the team's offense.

Murray's impressive skills have earned him numerous accolades, including the 2021-2022 steals champion title, which he won by leading the league with 138 steals. This achievement also earned him his first and only All-Star selection to date. The Pelicans acquired Murray in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, and he is under contract until 2028, provided he exercises his $31.6 million player option in 2027. Murray's current contract is substantial, with a $24.7 million salary this season and an average annual salary of $28.5 million over the next few years.
