Wolves Appoint Vitor Pereira as New Manager
Wolverhampton Wanderers has appointed Vitor Pereira as their new manager, replacing Gary O'Neill. Pereira's first game in charge will be against Leicester City.
Wolverhampton Wanderers has officially announced the appointment of Vitor Pereira as the club's new manager, replacing the recently sacked Gary O'Neil. Pereira, a 56-year-old Portuguese coach, will take the reins at Wolves, who are currently languishing in 19th place in the Premier League.
As had been widely speculated, Pereira emerged as Wolves' top choice to succeed O'Neil. He has put pen to paper on an 18-month contract, signaling the club's commitment to his vision and leadership.
Wolverhampton Wanderers has agreed to pay the termination clause for Vitor Pereira, releasing him from his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Shabab. Pereira had been at the helm of Al Shabab since February and had even extended his stay by signing a new contract in June. However, the opportunity to manage Wolves has prompted his departure.
Gary O'Neill's 16-month tenure as Wolves manager came to an abrupt end on Sunday, paving the way for Pereira's appointment. The English club has moved swiftly to replace O'Neill, and Pereira's experience and track record suggest he could be the right man to steer Wolves back on course.
Vitor Pereira, the former Porto coach, had previously come close to managing in England. He had even held talks with Everton, but ultimately, the opportunity did not materialize. However, Pereira has now been given the chance to make his mark in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira officially took charge of Wolves on Thursday, leading his first training session at Compton Park. He will make his managerial debut for the club when Wolves travel to Leicester City this weekend. The club confirmed Pereira's arrival in a statement, marking the beginning of a new era at Molineux.
Pereira faces a daunting task in revitalizing Wolves' struggling season. The team has conceded a league-high 40 goals, highlighting the need for significant defensive improvements. Additionally, Wolves have been plagued by disciplinary issues in recent weeks, including Mario Lemina being stripped of the captaincy and Matheus Cunha being charged by the Football Association for clashing with an Ipswich staff member.
Pereira's managerial debut for Wolves is scheduled for Sunday, December 22nd, when the team faces Leicester City.
“This is a challenging moment for the club, and we want to thank Vitor for taking on this responsibility,” Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said.
“We have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track, alongside the players and staff, and the entire club will be united in supporting him to achieve success.”
