Serie A Match Abandoned as Fiorentina Midfielder Edoardo Bove Collapses

Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove was hospitalized after collapsing on the pitch during a Serie A match against Inter Milan, prompting the game's abandonment.

Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove was rushed to the hospital after collapsing on the pitch during his team's Serie A match against Inter Milan on Sunday. The 22-year-old player suddenly fell to the ground shortly after the game began, prompting immediate concern from his teammates and the medical staff.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Bove was transported by ambulance to the nearby Careggi Hospital in Florence, where he received further medical attention. Fortunately, reports indicate that Bove was breathing on his own and had regained consciousness, providing a sense of relief after the alarming incident.

A Serie A spokesperson announced that the match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan was suspended and would be rescheduled for a later date, following the concerning incident involving Edoardo Bove.

In a subsequent joint statement from Fiorentina and the Careggi University Hospital Company, the current condition of the player was revealed: “The footballer Edoardo Bove, who was rescued on the pitch following a loss of consciousness during the match is currently under pharmacological sedation and hospitalised in intensive care.”

“Bove arrived at the emergency room in stable hemodynamic condition and the first cardiological and neurological tests performed excluded acute damage to the central nervous system and the cardio-respiratory system. He will be re-evaluated in the next 24 hours.”

The match between Fiorentina and Inter Milan was abruptly halted in the 17th minute when Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove suddenly collapsed on the pitch. The incident occurred while the referee was reviewing a potential VAR check on a disallowed Lautaro Martinez goal. Bove, 22, had appeared to be bending down to remove his boot when he unexpectedly fell to the ground.

Medical staff quickly rushed onto the pitch to attend to Bove, with his Fiorentina teammates forming a protective circle around him. Bove, who joined Fiorentina on loan from AS Roma in August, received immediate attention before being taken away in an ambulance. Following his departure, the referee instructed the players to leave the pitch and return to their dressing rooms

Inter Milan chairman Giuseppe Marotta emphasized that postponing the match was a straightforward decision, given the circumstances. “Football is a community, so naturally when these situations happen, all the players and the referee worked together to help and it was a spontaneous decision to abandon the game,” Marotta explained in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

The Italian football community rallied around Edoardo Bove, with numerous Serie A clubs offering their support. Juventus took to X to express their solidarity, posting: “We all are with you Edoardo!” Meanwhile, league leaders Napoli also sent a message of encouragement, saying: “Come on Edoardo, we are with you!”
