Serie A: Fiorentina Stun Juventus with Late Equalizer in 2-2 Thriller
Juventus were denied a win by Fiorentina's late surge, as Riccardo Sottil's volley secured a 2-2 draw in a pulsating Serie A encounter.
Khephren Thuram marked his Juventus debut with a memorable brace, but Fiorentina staged a thrilling comeback, thanks to goals from Moise Kean and a late Riccardo Sottil volley, to secure a 2-2 draw. Both teams entered the match level on 31 points, although Fiorentina held a game in hand.
Juventus aimed to build on their recent win over Monza, which ended a streak of four consecutive draws. However, the team was still without several key players, including Tim Weah, Arkadiusz Milik, Jonas Rouhi, Gleison Bremer, and Juan Cuadrado. Meanwhile, Fiorentina sought to bounce back from consecutive defeats to Bologna and Udinese, which halted their impressive eight-match winning streak.
The encounter held extra significance, as Moise Kean and Dusan Vlahovic faced their former clubs, adding a layer of intensity to the match. The atmosphere was further charged by the presence of Nico Gonzalez on the Fiorentina bench, awaiting his opportunity to make an impact against his former team.
Dusan Vlahovic had an early opportunity to open the scoring, but his glancing header from Francisco Conceicao's cross sailed narrowly wide. However, the match was momentarily halted as the referee intervened to address a serious issue. A statement was read over the public address system, warning Fiorentina fans to cease their racist chants directed at Vlahovic, the Serbia international.
Juventus capitalized on the disruption to take the lead. Khephren Thuram embarked on a powerful run from midfield, exploiting a gap in the heart of the Fiorentina defense. Thuram caught Danilo Cataldi and Luca Ranieri off guard, drilling a precise low shot into the near bottom corner to give Juventus a 1-0 advantage.
Fiorentina threatened to equalize when Albert Gudmundsson attempted to finish from outside the box, but Manuel Locatelli intervened, throwing himself into the path of the shot to block the effort.
However, Fiorentina's persistence paid off as they drew level through Moise Kean. Yacine Adli delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, and Pierre Kalulu mistimed his jump, allowing Kean to meet the ball with a glancing header from six yards. Kean, facing his former club, chose not to celebrate the goal, instead waving an apologetic gesture to the Juventus crowd.
David De Gea produced a breathtaking save, diving to his right to deny Dusan Vlahovic's powerful close-range shot at the near post. Moments later, he was relieved to see Manuel Locatelli's thunderous effort from outside the box whistle narrowly past the top corner.
Khephren Thuram swiftly restored Juventus' lead immediately after the restart, scoring his second goal of the game. A deflection from Danilo Cataldi inadvertently aided Teun Koopmeiners' through ball, which landed perfectly for Thuram. The midfielder seized the opportunity, sweeping the ball into the far bottom corner with the inside of his right boot from eight yards.
Moise Kean had a chance to level the score once more, but his shot was directed straight at Michele Di Gregorio after Lucas Beltran's flick-on. Meanwhile, David De Gea was called upon to make another spectacular save, this time reacting quickly to deny Federico Gatti's free header from a corner.
