Luis Enrique: PSG Won't Make Big Transfers in January

PSG manager Luis Enrique confirms the club won't be making significant transfers in January, citing a strong squad and focus on emerging talent.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has revealed that the club is unlikely to make significant signings in the January transfer window, citing the strength of the current squad. Instead, Enrique plans to focus on nurturing the team's young talent.

Enrique's comments come ahead of PSG's French Cup match against RC Lens on Sunday. The club has undergone a transformation since the departure of key players Kylian Mbappe, Manuel Ugarte, and Danilo Pereira last season. This change has paved the way for emerging talents to take center stage, marking an exciting new chapter for the team.

Paris Saint-Germain, the French champions, have adopted a more prudent approach to the transfer market, departing from their previous reputation for making high-profile, big-money signings, such as Neymar Jr. and Lionel Messi. This shift in strategy was highlighted by manager Luis Enrique, who expressed his satisfaction with the current squad. “What gift do I hope for at Christmas? I am very happy with the squad,” he stated.

Enrique emphasized the importance of being vigilant during the transfer window, while also prioritizing the development of young talent. “The best approach during every transfer window is to stay attentive,” he noted. "It's difficult to improve our squad. We want to develop our young talents. As far as the market is concerned, we've got a very good team." Enrique also pointed out that the club had been active in the transfer market last year, making over 10 signings, and therefore, there is no pressing need for new additions at present. “Last year, we made more than 10 transfers. There's no urgency or need at the moment. If there's an opportunity to improve the squad then great, but we already have a very strong team.”

Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning Coupe de France champions, are seeking a record 16th title this season. Their campaign begins with a challenging first-round matchup against RC Lens, who currently occupy seventh place in the Ligue 1 standings. PSG boasts a commanding lead in Ligue 1, sitting atop the table with 40 points, a 10-point cushion over second-placed Marseille.

Despite their domestic dominance, PSG has struggled in the Champions League, ranking 25th in the competition. With the tournament resuming next month, the team will need to be at the top of their game to remain in contention. Manager Luis Enrique acknowledged the demanding schedule ahead, stating, “From January onwards, we continue in all competitions, it will be very demanding... I like that the players are able to rest a bit. It's all about disconnecting now to be able to work as best as possible for the second half of the season.”

PSG will be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for their match against Lens, as he recovers from a facial injury sustained during the team's 4-2 victory over Monaco on Wednesday. However, defender Nuno Mendes is expected to feature on Sunday, having recovered from a thigh injury that forced him to miss the team's league win over Lyon last weekend.
