EPL: Southampton Hold On for Point Despite Fulham Dominance
Fulham were denied victory by a resilient Southampton side, who claimed a valuable point in their battle against relegation.
Ivan Juric, Southampton's newly appointed manager, observed from the stands as the Premier League's bottom club, Southampton, displayed resilience to secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Fulham.
Juric, a former Roma manager and Croatia player, was announced as the new Saints boss on Saturday, following the dismissal of Russell Martin last Sunday. Martin's departure came in the wake of a dismal 5-0 home defeat to Tottenham. On this occasion, Juric watched from the press seats alongside his coaching staff, witnessing the battling Saints earn only their sixth point of the season.
Despite their determined effort, Southampton owed a significant debt of gratitude to returning goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who played a crucial role in preventing Fulham from securing a victory. His presence between the posts proved instrumental in the Saints' ability to hold out for a draw.
England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made a successful return from a six-week injury layoff, producing several impressive saves to deny the hosts. Ramsdale was called into action as early as the third minute, expertly getting his fingertips to a curling effort from Alex Iwobi. Later, in the second half, he showcased his exceptional reflexes by pushing Harry Wilson's powerful half-volley over the crossbar.
Fulham substitute Adama Traore squandered a golden opportunity to secure a late victory, dragging his angled effort narrowly wide of the target. Despite earning a point, Southampton's woes continued, as they slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table at Christmas for the first time in their history.
Southampton's struggles are reflected in their meager six-point tally, which is the joint-third lowest in the Premier League era. Only Sheffield United, with two points in the 2020-21 season, and Sunderland, with five points in 2005-06, have fared worse at this stage of the campaign.
