Nigerian court sentences Ifeoma Nlemuba to 5 years in prison for attempted murder after accepting a plea bargain agreement.
A High Court in Asaba, Delta State, has sentenced Ifeoma Nlemuba to five years in prison for attempted murder. Initially, she pleaded not guilty to the charge, but later opted for a plea bargain.
In July 2024, her defense counsel submitted a plea bargain application to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. This was in line with Delta State's 2024 Plea Bargain Guidelines for Prosecution. The Attorney-General approved the application.
Ifeoma Nlemuba, the convict, pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of attempted murder on November 5, 2024, in accordance with Guideline 20 (3) (a) of the Plea Bargain Guidelines for prosecutors in Delta State, 2024. This significant development came after her initial plea of not guilty.
As outlined in Guidelines 23(a) of the Plea Bargain Guidelines for Prosecutors in Delta State 2024, the prosecution, led by A.P. Popo, Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice Asaba, filed the signed Plea Bargain Agreement. This agreement proposed a five-year sentence, inclusive of the period already spent in custody by Nlemuba.
Justice Diai Christopher Dumebi approved the Plea Bargain Agreement, convicting and sentencing Ifeoma Nlemuba to five years in prison, including time already served. The court also mandated medical attention for the convict while in custody.
Prosecution counsel A.P. Popo praised the judgment, citing its potential to accelerate justice delivery in the state. This development is expected to streamline the legal process, reduce workload, and save time in litigation.
