Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, has passed away on November 5, 2024, after battling an undisclosed illness. He was 56 years old. Born on February 28, 1968, in Irepodun, Osun State, Lagbaja had a distinguished military career, serving as the Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his demise.


Just a few weeks prior, on October 20, 2024, the Nigerian Army had dismissed rumors of Lagbaja's death, stating that he was alive and undergoing medical treatment abroad. However, his condition worsened, leading to his eventual passing. Following his death, President Bola Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, 2024, and later decorated him with the rank of Lieutenant General on November 5, 2024.


President Bola Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring his remarkable contributions to the nation. Lagbaja was born on February 28, 1968, and embarked on his illustrious military career by enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987.


Lagbaja's commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps marked the beginning of his distinguished service. This milestone occurred on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course. Throughout his career, Lagbaja demonstrated exceptional leadership, earning numerous honors, including the Nigerian Army Medal, Grand Service Star, and Field Command Medal of Honour.


Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja's illustrious military career spanned over three decades, marked by exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment. He commanded platoons in the 93 Battalion and 72 Special Forces Battalion, showcasing his tactical prowess.
