Kenyan Catholic Bishops Spurn President Ruto's Donation

Catholic Bishops in Kenya Maintain Stance Against Church Politicization

“Politicians are urged to refrain from turning the pulpit into a stage for political rhetoric, as such actions...”

President Ruto's donation to the Catholic Church in Kenya has been rejected, with bishops citing concerns over politicization and maintaining church neutrality.

Catholic bishops in Nairobi, Kenya, have taken a bold stance by rejecting a substantial donation of 12.3 million Shillings from President William Ruto. This decision was made in accordance with the church's policy against accepting financial contributions from political leaders, which is aimed at maintaining the church's independence and integrity.

The donation was made during a church service on Sunday, November 17, but Archbishop Philip Anyolo announced that the money would be returned. President Ruto's contribution was not the only one; the Governor of Nairobi, Johnson Sakaja, also donated 4.1 million Shillings to the church.

The Catholic Church in Kenya has consistently emphasized its opposition to the politicization of religious spaces. Archbishop Philip Anyolo reiterated this stance, stating that the church discourages the use of fundraisers and religious events as platforms for political promotion. This decision reflects the church's commitment to maintaining its neutrality and independence.

“Politicians are urged to refrain from turning the pulpit into a stage for political rhetoric, as such actions undermine the sanctity of worship places,” he said.

Archbishop Philip Anyolo has urged political leaders in Kenya to prioritize addressing pressing issues highlighted by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB). These concerns include corruption, human rights violations, political conflicts, and the protection of freedom of expression.

“The Church must remain a neutral entity, free from political influence, to effectively serve as a space for spiritual growth and community guidance,” Archbishop Anyolo emphasized. He welcomed politicians to attend church services as regular worshippers seeking spiritual guidance, provided they refrain from exploiting their roles for political gain.

The funds donated by President William Ruto were earmarked for specific purposes within the Catholic Church. These included supporting the Soweto Catholic Church Choir, funding the Parish Missionary Council (PMC), and constructing a residence for the parish priest.

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) had previously criticized President Ruto's administration for fostering a “culture of lies” and utilizing state resources to stifle opposing viewpoints. This criticism highlights the tensions between the Catholic Church and the current government in Kenya.
