The NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, commends the bravery of injured officers and mourns the loss of personnel in the Kaduna ambush.
Tragedy struck on November 18 when armed assailants ambushed a team of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel in Kaduna State. Sadly, the bodies of four NSCDC officers have been recovered, and they were among seven individuals initially reported missing after the attack.
The victims were on an official assignment, conducting surveillance and monitoring of national grid installations in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, when they were ambushed near the Farin-Kasa area in Chikun Local Government Area. NSCDC spokesperson Babatunde Afolabi confirmed the recovery of the four bodies on Friday, November 29, and noted that efforts are ongoing to account for the remaining officers.
The ambush was a brutal attack by over 200 heavily armed insurgents, who opened fire on the NSCDC convoy using sophisticated weapons. Despite being outnumbered, the NSCDC operatives fought back and neutralized over 50 attackers in the ensuing gunfight. The NSCDC has condemned the attack and reassured Nigerians that the Corps remains committed to protecting critical national assets.
“As of today, out of the seven missing officers, four dead bodies had been recovered, two men returned back to base unhurt while one personnel is still missing in action,” Afolabi said.
Kaduna and Niger States in Northern Nigeria continue to bear the brunt of terrorism, with multiple armed groups wreaking havoc across the region. These groups frequently target vulnerable communities, security personnel, travelers, and public infrastructure, leading to widespread instability and chaos.
The situation has escalated to the point where these groups are now sabotaging critical infrastructure, such as electricity cables, resulting in prolonged power outages that have lasted over a week in several northern states. This has further exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.
In the wake of these tragic events, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and the personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. On Friday, November 29, NSCDC spokesperson Babatunde Afolabi announced that the Commandant General of the Corps, Ahmed Audi, had extended his condolences to all NSCDC personnel over the tragic incident.
“Audi assured that the Group Personal Accident/Group Life Insurance will be facilitated to cushion the effects of the unfortunate incident on the affected personnel,” he said.
NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, praised the bravery and dedication of injured officers during a visit to the Corps' medical facilities on November 28. Audi commended the affected personnel for their selfless service, acknowledging their sacrifices in the line of duty.
“He saluted the gallantry, bravery and courage exhibited by the operatives during the ambush, and pledged that the corps would cater for all their medical expenses and other welfare needs.
“He also condemned the bloody terrorist attack and described it as a brutal and devastating act of violence which must not be allowed to fester considering the number of security operatives that have fallen,” he said.
NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, has urged personnel across the country to remain resolute and unwavering in the face of the recent incident. He emphasized the crucial importance of vigilance, strict adherence to safety protocols, and prayers for divine protection as they continue to combat insecurity in Nigeria.
Audi also made a heartfelt appeal to the public, urging them to cooperate fully with the NSCDC and other security agencies. This collective effort, he believes, will significantly strengthen the nation's ability to safeguard lives and property, ultimately benefiting the nation as a whole.
