Investment Diplomacy: Presidency Justifies Tinubu's Overseas Trips

Presidency Defends Tinubu's Frequent Travels as Investment Hunts

“The president is the number one spokesperson for his administration. These trips aren't junkets...”

The presidency has justified President Tinubu's overseas travels, saying they're aimed at promoting Nigeria's economic interests and fostering relationships with other world leaders.

The presidency has come out in defense of President Bola Tinubu's frequent travels, saying they're a strategic move to attract international investors and boost Nigeria's economy. According to presidential spokesman Sunday Dare, “Presidents are the chief marketers of their countries... When they travel and go to these forums, they also meet other world leaders for a reason.”

Since taking office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has embarked on numerous trips to countries like the UK, US, South Africa, Kenya, Benin Republic, Germany, Senegal, Qatar, and Ghana. His latest destination is France, where he's currently on a state visit. These travels are aimed at promoting Nigeria's interests and fostering relationships with other world leaders.

Presidential spokesman Sunday Dare has fired back at critics of President Tinubu's frequent trips abroad, saying these visits are crucial and ultimately benefit Nigeria. According to Dare, presidents are essentially their country's chief marketers, and these trips provide opportunities for them to meet with other world leaders and promote their nation's interests.

“I think that for a country looking for direct investment, for a country that's trying to pursue a new trajectory when it comes to the critical sector of the economy, there is a need for the new president to quickly make sure that he interacts with investors and other big presidents, international organizations who are present at most of these meetings they attend,” Dare explained.

He added, “Yes, there is work for the president at home, but he cannot be a sit-at-home president. He must go out there and speak for this country. He needs to make a strong pitch.

“The president is the number one spokesperson for his administration. These trips aren't junkets. They are critical for the country's development.”
