Former US President Barack Obama extends rare bipartisan gesture, congratulating Donald Trump.

Former President Barack Obama has extended congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. This win secures Trump's second term as President, following his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Obama's message acknowledged that the outcome wasn't his preferred choice but emphasized the significance of a peaceful transition of power.

In his statement, Obama, along with former First Lady Michelle Obama, congratulated President-elect Donald Trump and Senator Vance on their victory, recognizing the millions of Americans who cast their votes. This gesture reflects Obama's commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a smooth transfer of power.

Trump's victory has garnered international attention, with world leaders like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron offering congratulations.

“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for.

“But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won't always win out and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power,” Obama said.

Additionally, Trump has begun preparing for his cabinet appointments and has received invitations for meetings, including one from President Joe Biden at the White House.
