Bundesliga: RB Leipzig Suffer Heaviest Defeat of Season as Wolfsburg Run Riot

RB Leipzig suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg, managed by former Leipzig coach Ralph Hassenhuttl.

RB Leipzig's winless streak has reached five games, their longest drought since April 2018, after a dismal 5-1 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg. The loss was a humbling experience for Leipzig, who were thoroughly outplayed by their opponents.

Wolfsburg's explosive start to the game will be remembered as one of the most impressive in the club's history. The visitors came out of the blocks firing, catching Leipzig off guard and setting the tone for a resounding victory.

Wolfsburg made a blistering start to the game, scoring two goals within the first five minutes. The opener came in the fourth minute when Mohamed Amoura converted Ridle Baku's near-post cross. Just a minute later, Tiago Tomas's long-range strike deflected off Kevin Kampl and wrong-footed Peter Gulacsi, doubling Wolfsburg's advantage.

Wolfsburg's dominance continued, and they found themselves 3-0 up after just 15 minutes. Mohamed Amoura scored his second goal of the game, collecting Bence Dardai's pass inside the area and firing an effort through Gulacsi's legs at the near post. The visitors maintained their attacking pressure throughout the first half, and Leipzig were fortunate to only be three goals down at the break, with Baku spurning a great chance to add to Wolfsburg's tally.

With RB Leipzig's winless streak reaching five games, a milestone that previously led to the sacking of Ralph Hasenhuttl, Marco Rose must have been feeling anxious at halftime. However, his team's performance after the break did little to alleviate concerns about Rose's job security, as they largely continued to struggle.

Leipzig's shortcomings eventually proved costly once again, as Wolfsburg scored their fourth goal of the game. Konstantinos Koulierakis flicked on a corner at the near post, and Joachim Maehle was quickest to react, heading home the goal that effectively ended the contest.

With the game all but won, Wolfsburg eased off their attacks, seemingly heeding Leipzig's plea for mercy. However, Leipzig managed to snatch a late consolation goal through Willi Orban. Wolfsburg responded with a fifth goal, scored by Kevin Behrens, sealing a resounding 5-1 victory that propels them into the hunt for European spots.
