Bundesliga: Dortmund Boosted by Süle and Waetjen Returns Ahead of Bayern Clash
Borussia Dortmund are set to welcome back defender Niklas Süle and midfielder Kjell Waetjen from injury ahead of their crucial Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich.
Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzić's assistant Nuri Şahin has provided a positive update on the health of striker Serhou Guirassy. The 28-year-old Guirassy had been sidelined by a brief illness last week but is now on the mend and expected to be available for the highly anticipated Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Guirassy, who has scored six league goals this season, made a successful return to action on Wednesday, coming off the bench to score in Dortmund's 3-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb. His recovery is a welcome boost for Dortmund as they prepare to host leaders Bayern Munich in a crucial Bundesliga matchup.
“We expect that he will be a step further,” Sahin told a press conference on Friday when asked whether the Guinea international was ready to start against Bayern.
“Obviously he is a very important player for us. A player like him can change a game's entire structure.”
“He handled his substitute appearance in Zagreb well after his illness.”
Injuries have taken a toll on Borussia Dortmund, causing them to slip to fifth place in the Bundesliga with 19 points, trailing leaders Bayern Munich by 10 points. A major contributing factor to their struggles has been their inability to secure a win in any of their away league matches this season.
Despite their challenges, Dortmund have been unbeatable at home, boasting a perfect record with six consecutive league wins at Signal Iduna Park. The team is set to receive a significant boost with the return of defender Niklas Süle and midfielder Kjell Waetjen from injury. With a sold-out crowd of 81,365 expected to fill the stadium, Dortmund will be eager to capitalize on their home advantage against Bayern Munich.
“It is the biggest game in Germany, the one that gets the most exposure and I think it will be the biggest for quite some time,” said Sahin. “It is special to be in this role for such a game.”
“Bayern defend high and that creates spaces at the back but they keep the opponents away,” he said.
”There will be spaces for us to play in but they have not conceded a goal in some games now.”
“We have the expectation to win at home tomorrow. No reason not to have that expectation with six wins from six home games. But the fact is Bayern are ahead on points and it is a chance for us to close the gap tomorrow.”
