Police in Anambra State have arrested a couple accused of sending threatening messages to residents, sparking widespread fear and concern.
A couple, Kingsley Okoye, 36, and Chidinma Okoye, 27, have been apprehended by the Anambra State police for allegedly sending threatening messages to residents, demanding ransom in exchange for their safety. The messages threatened kidnapping and murder if the demands were not met.
The couple was arrested on Friday in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. The police spokesperson, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Friday. According to Ikenga, the police acted on reports from concerned residents who had received threatening messages from unknown individuals.
The arrest is seen as a response to the growing concerns of Anambra residents who have been receiving threatening messages. The police have been working to identify and apprehend those responsible, and the arrest of the couple is a significant development in this effort.
According to Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson, residents had been receiving threatening text messages and WhatsApp voice notes from unknown individuals. These messages demanded ransom and threatened to kill the recipients if they failed to comply.
Following the reports, a joint security team consisting of the police and the Anambra Vigilante Group launched an investigation. Utilizing technology-driven intelligence, the team successfully tracked down and arrested the couple. During the arrest, mobile phones and SIM cards were seized from the suspects.
“The couple specialises in sending threatening messages to people and demanding ransom or they shall be abducted or killed,” he explained.
“They confessed to the crime and admitted to destroying some of the SIM cards which they had used to commit the crimes.”
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnaghe Obono, has instructed that the case be transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Robbery Squad for a thorough investigation.
