President Tinubu offers heartfelt condolences to Niger State over devastating boat accident, commending emergency workers & local divers for tireless recovery efforts.

President Bola Tinubu has reached out with heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the devastating boat accident in Mokwa Local Government Area on Tuesday night. The tragic incident occurred when a boat carrying approximately 300 people, mainly women and children, capsized on the Gbajibo River while traveling from the Mundi community.

Fortunately, rescue efforts managed to save at least 150 lives, but sadly, 25 bodies have been recovered so far, according to Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

It's worth noting that President Tinubu has also expressed sadness over a similar boat accident in Kwara State, which resulted in over 100 fatalities, mostly wedding guests. These tragic events highlight the importance of maritime safety and the need for vigilance to prevent such incidents.

“President Tinubu commiserates with the families of the victims and prays for the repose of the souls of the dead,” the statement said.

“The President directs the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the spate of boat accidents in Niger State and across the country and devise modalities to check the trend.

“He orders NIWA to expand the scope of its surveillance of inland waters to ensure our people's safety and prosecute boat operators violating the ban on night sailing.”

President Tinubu has praised the heroic efforts of emergency workers and local divers who are tirelessly working to recover bodies from the tragic boat accident in Niger State's Mokwa Local Government Area.
