A tragic incident occurred at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Ogun State's Imeko Afon Local Government Area, resulting in the death of a student, Ariyo. According to reports, the student's demise was allegedly caused by severe corporal punishment inflicted by a teacher.
A devastating incident in Ogun, Nigeria, has led to the death of a student following a brutal flogging by her teacher, who administered 162 strokes of the cane. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, renewing debates on the use of corporal punishment in schools and prompting calls for accountability and reform.
Influencer Adetoun Onajobi took to Instagram on Friday, October 25, to share the disturbing details of the incident. Onajobi revealed that the teacher had explicitly warned Ariyo's class against damaging a newly introduced dustbin, which the educator had brought to the classroom.
The situation escalated when Ariyo made a seemingly innocuous comment, joking that the dustbin was purchased using students' funds. Unfortunately, the teacher took extreme offense to Ariyo's remark, unleashing a vicious and ultimately fatal physical punishment of 162 lashes.
Ariyo's comment was brought to the principal's attention, prompting the principal to order disciplinary action. Subsequently, the teacher allegedly administered 162 lashes to Ariyo, as per the principal's instruction.
During the severe beating, Ariyo lost consciousness. According to Adetoun, there was an inexcusable delay before school staff took Ariyo to the hospital. Tragically, upon arrival, Ariyo was declared dead.
A senior police officer, familiar with the incident, verified the events, though not officially sanctioned to speak publicly. The officer mentioned that the incident sparked unrest in the community, but timely police intervention successfully restored calm.
“We are on the matter, the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police said.
