The initial body count stood at six, but unfortunately, the death toll rose to nine as more victims succumbed to their injuries. The police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, working to bring those responsible to justice.

Eyewitnesses have shed light on the violence that erupted near Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Anambra, revealing a suspected cult clash. According to witnesses, the incident began when cultists invaded the area and opened fire on members of a rival group gathered near the school gate.


The sudden outbreak of violence sparked panic and chaos, with stray bullets claiming the lives of innocent bystanders. A UNIZIK student, who witnessed the scene, recounted the harrowing experience: “We were coming to school this morning when we started hearing heavy gunshots.”


This account corroborates reports of a fierce shootout between rival cult groups, resulting in fatalities and widespread fear. The student's testimony highlights the randomness and danger of the attack, which caught unsuspecting passersby in the crossfire.


Another witness echoed similar sentiments, describing the chaos and terror that gripped the area as the gunshots rang out. The incident has raised concerns about safety and security in and around educational institutions.


“Over six persons were shot dead instantly near Witness Garden, Ifite Amansea Road. But the number of dead persons increased as it was found out that stray bullets also hit some people.


“The hoodlums invaded the area at about 9:30 am and started shooting at some persons suspected to be members of a cult group.


“They also pursued one person driving in a vehicle, but they did not get the person.


“One of our lecturers coming to school had to run back. She called me, saying she saw over seven lifeless bodies. Even the schoolchildren and other passers-by had to run back.”


Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Anambra State, verified the incident and stated that police operatives have contained the situation, bringing normalcy back to the affected area.


Ikenga said, “The police response team has taken over the scene of indiscriminate shooting today 24/10/2024 by 9:15 am at Ifite, behind Unizik gate, Awka, by suspected gunmen.


“Preliminary information showed that the armed men started shooting sporadically, and some bullets fatally hit four persons in the area and were rushed to the hospital for first aid by the police operatives.


“Also, some empty shells of bullets have been recovered at the scene.


“Meanwhile, operations are ongoing in the area, and further details shall be communicated.”


The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into threatening videos and voice notes circulating on social media, which aim to incite violence in the state. These clips are being taken seriously, and the command is committed to upholding law and order, ensuring that no individual or group infringes on others' fundamental human rights.
