Sunday Emmanuel, a labourer, was remanded at the Segede correctional facility by a Chief Magistrate's Court in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday, October 22. He allegedly macheted his 35-year-old wife, Linda, to death during a heated argument over money. Tragically, Emmanuel also attacked his 3-year-old son, inflicting head injuries with the intent to kill.


Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi ordered Emmanuel's remand without taking his plea, pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Ondo State Ministry of Justice. The case highlights the severity of domestic violence and its devastating consequences.

Emmanuel faced charges in court for murder and attempted murder. Prosecutor Inspector Josephine Awanna provided details: on October 7 at 5:30 pm, Emmanuel allegedly committed the crimes at Ogbeni Camp Ofosu in Idanre Local Government Area, Ondo State.


Awanna revealed that Emmanuel's wife, Linda, was brutally killed with machete blows to the neck and cheek. The prosecutor's words painted a disturbing picture of the alleged crime.


The charge read in part, “That you, Sunday Emmanuel, male, on October 7, 2004, at about 5:30 at Ogbeni Camp via Ofosu, in the Ondo Magistraterial District, did unlawfully kill one Linda Emmanuel, 35, by macheting her on the neck and cheek and hereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006.


“That you, Sunday Emmanuel, on the same date, time and place, unlawfully attempted with the intention to kill your son, aged 3, by macheting him on the head.”


Inspector Josephine Awanna provided additional details. After allegedly killing his wife, Linda, Emmanuel attempted to take the life of their 3-year-old son, Sunday, by inflicting severe head injuries with a machete.

The charges against Emmanuel violate Sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Ondo State Criminal Code Laws, 2006, pertaining to murder and attempted murder.


Due to the severity of the crimes, the defendant's plea was not taken. The prosecution requested that the court remand Emmanuel in the correctional facility pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).


Magistrate Olateju Odenusi-Fadeyi granted the request, ordering Emmanuel's remand. The case was adjourned until February 2, 2025, for further proceedings.
