Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Chief of Field at the Bauchi Field Office, recently spoke out about the alarming rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria. At a two-day media dialogue on 'Strengthening Primary Healthcare Systems: GAVI UNICEF PHC MoU' in Gombe, Nigeria, she emphasized that 10,000 deaths out of 100,000 pregnancies or deliveries is unacceptable.

This staggering statistic underscores the urgent need for collective action to address the issue. Dr. Rafique stressed that everyone must come together to find solutions, ensuring every woman has access to quality healthcare services throughout pregnancy and safe delivery at a healthcare facility.

UNICEF has demonstrated its commitment to supporting Nigerian states in achieving better healthcare outcomes. For instance, the organization pledged technical and financial support to Gombe State for successful implementation of its monitoring and evaluation policy. Additionally, UNICEF praised Gombe State's investment of over N11.1 billion to tackle malnutrition, calling it a worthwhile spending.
