“From 6pm yesterday to 10am this morning, six more dead bodies were recovered...”

President Bola Tinubu orders investigation into Nigeria's surge in boat accidents, directs prosecution of violators, and commends rescue efforts while condoling with families of victims.

A devastating boat accident in Niger State, Nigeria, has claimed 42 lives, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The tragedy occurred on October 1 when a vessel carrying over 300 passengers to Gbajibo for Mawlid celebrations capsized in Mokwa Local Government Area.

Rescue efforts, led by NSEMA and other emergency agencies, have saved 150 lives. However, the search for missing persons continues.

In an update, NSEMA spokesperson Ibrahim Hussaini announced that six additional bodies were recovered on October 4, bringing the total death toll to 42.

“From 6pm yesterday to 10am this morning, six more dead bodies were recovered, bringing the total to 42 corpses,” Hussaini.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the recent surge in boat accidents across Nigeria. This directive, issued on October 3, 2024, comes after a devastating boat accident in Niger State claimed numerous lives.

Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, ordered NIWA to not only investigate the accidents but also to expand its surveillance of inland waters to ensure people's safety. Additionally, the President instructed NIWA to prosecute boat operators who violate the ban on night sailing, a measure aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.

The President's directive is a response to the alarming increase in boat accidents, including the recent incident in Niger State where a wooden boat carrying over 300 passengers capsized, resulting in the recovery of 70 bodies. The Niger State Government has also vowed to enforce stricter safety measures to prevent such incidents.

Key Actions Directed by President Tinubu:

Investigate boat accidents: NIWA to probe the causes of recent accidents

Expand surveillance: Increase monitoring of inland waters to ensure safety

Prosecute violators: Take action against boat operators breaking night sailing ban

These measures demonstrate the government's commitment to addressing the issue and preventing further loss of life.

President Bola Tinubu reached out to offer condolences to the state and families of the victims, while also praising the tireless efforts of emergency responders and local divers who participated in the recovery operations. This gesture shows the president's commitment to supporting those affected by the tragedy and acknowledging the bravery of those who risked their lives to help.
